June 21 Daylesford and Hepburn SpringsMy hubby had visited me for 9 days. We were very busy with William's thesis; last editing, binding, etc. We spent probably 5-6 days for that!
Anyway, we had 2-day getaway to Daylesford and Hepburn Springs, small little towns, 1 hour drive from Melbourne, heading Northeast, famous for its natural mineral water resource. We stayed in Finzi Contini, a small cottage in Hepburn Springs. The facility is very impressive with generous breakky provision. There is Ned Kelly woodfire place which William enjoyed playing and operating it. There is also a big corner spa bath which I did enjoyed sinking myself in. I love sinking myself in "Japanese style bath", which use high temperatured water (38-42 degree) as the feeling afterwards is so "atatakai" (means nice and warm in English). However, I should not have enjoyed too long as I almost die afterwards! My romantic spa bath plan turned up to be funny story..:) We had our first lunch in a very famous place, called "The Lake House". The view is impressive, the service is great but the food is quite disappointing. We might not enjoy Western food much, anyway, we did enjoy local wine, sit next to woodfire and relax among beautiful lake view. There is only 1 Thai restaurant in this twin towns, we had to have Asian food for dinner so we dropped in. The food is fantastic. I had a chat with a Thai owner who has been in Australia for almost 10 years, she also has another Thai restaurant in Ballarat. She was so happy to know that I am a doctor so she asked me to tell her whenever I have my clinic (which is not that quick!). Thai people are always friendly and warm-hearted...:) We visited "Lavandula farm" even though it was not season for lavender, Chocolate Mill (very yummy choccy), the Convent Gallery (one of the most beautiful gallery in Victoria) and the Mill Market, a heaven for antique lover (like William). We almost ran out of time but we still could make it to the natural mineral/spring water source on the way back to Melbourne. The taste of this natural mineral water is horrible! Unfortunately, this twin towns don't have the real "hot spring" or "onsen" (Japanese for hot spring). There are several places for heated spring water pool which we were not so interested in. However, we will definitely visit this small little towns again and stay longer as well as try heated spring water....of course not too long like my spa experience!! June 10 Night shift ended.I finished my first set of ED nights on Thursday morning (after 7 nights straight!). It had been pretty good night shift though, not too busy with 2 registrars and me (HMO). Just only 10 minutes left (7.50am), an ambulance brought a lady with loss of consciousness into ED. We normally don't pick up new patient 1 hour before shift ends as it is difficult to finalize the case and hand over. However, the girl had a seizure, she was brought into resuscitation cubicle. My registrars had to attend the case. At 8 am, the consultant came for ED ward round and found that the girl in resus cubicle was quite unwell so we all needed to attend the case. She was a large lady, airway compromised, found to be unconscious at home. According to the husband, she had low platelet with splenectomy few years back (?ITP). We didn't have much information about here but she needed intubation. It was my first time seeing "a real intubation" and "a real urgent ED case" in Australia. Quite interesting how busy the nurses seemed to be, how exciting situation was, similar to the series "ER". However, I didn't think the nurses should have been that exaggerated for the situation! We had a hand over at about 9.15 am, but it's worth to experience emergency case for me. My first Thai patient in MelbourneI have been sometimes asked to look after Chinese patients if nobody else can speak Chinese. I'm not Chinese but I can communicate in basic Chinese (because my hubby is Chinese). One time, I was asked to see a pregnant lady with PV bleeding. She was able to speak very few English while I could communicate in Chinese for only basic conversation. However, we managed to understand each other and the patient was very happy to speak in her own language. People sometimes ask me "can you speak Vietnamese?" as there are huge Vietnamese population in Melbourne, especially in the hospital I am working. All Asians look similar to Westerner, for them, Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese has no difference. One night of my set of night shifts in ED, I picked up one patient from the screen, her name is "Sirikin". At that time, I was thinking, she might be Thai or Laos as I found several Laos patients in ED who can speak Thai. After I greeted her, I could tell from her accent that she is Thai so I asked her if she is Thai and she said "yes". I started talking to her in Thai and she was so surprised and happy. She said "You look too young to be a doctor" ha ha ha, she also looked much younger than 50. Thanks for the youthful Thai genes..:) She told me she was so lucky to meet Thai doctor. I was also her first Thai doctor here even though she has been in Australia for almost 20 years. Her friend told us that he should not had come as she was able to explain her symptoms in Thai by herself. He turned up to be the one who couldn't understand us! Australia is a multicultural country so seeing patients with interpreters in quite common here. It is interesting though to see people living in this country for many ten years but still unable to communicate in English. I think whenever people get sick, they all prefer to express their symptoms in their own mother tongue. Many friends told me many times that they don't see many Thai patients or Thai doctors here. I answered them "me neither". Probably most Thai doctors go to America or doctor life is Thailand is too good June
